Former minister Indranil Sen was arrested by the Kolkata Police detective department on Wednesday in a case involving alleged fraud through Durga Puja pass sales, unauthorised use of UNESCO’s name and reputation, and irregularities in government tenders. He was arrested while leaving the Enforcement Directorate office and questioned until late at night.

Allegations in the case

The case, registered at Bowbazar police station, names Indranil Sen, his wife Madhuchhanda Sen, several prominent people and ‘Mass Art’. Lalbazar has alleged that irregularities linked to the puja took place from 2022 to 2025 with Indranil’s support. The allegations related to pass sales and the use of UNESCO’s name involve at least Rs 30 crore, according to the police.

Police have alleged that ‘Mass Art’ did not have the necessary permission to use UNESCO’s name, reputation and logo for commercial purposes. Allegations that money was deposited into certain bank accounts held in the names of Indranil’s wife, daughter and relatives are also under investigation.

Government tender allegations

The Enforcement Directorate has alleged that around Rs 85 crore was given to companies linked to Indranil’s close associates in violation of government tender rules. The case also includes allegations that tenders for government events and the book fair were awarded to companies associated with close aides. Lalbazar has put the total alleged institutional corruption linked to the puja and tender matters at more than Rs 115 crore.

The ED has claimed that Rs 3.8 crore in cash was deposited into the bank account of ‘Octe Records’, owned by Indranil. The agency has also claimed that Rs 30 lakh was sent from that account to Mamata Banerjee.

Police to seek custody

Kolkata Police and the ED are conducting separate investigations into the matter. Indranil Sen will be produced before Bankshall court on Thursday, when police are expected to seek his custody.

Complainant Joydeep said, “I got the result of the fight that began in 2023 today.” Indranil Sen’s lawyer said, “All the allegations against the former minister are false. We will prove it in court.”
