The BJP has attacked former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah over allegations that he praised Pakistan’s role in the Kashmir issue. Farooq made the remarks at a National Conference workers’ meeting in Baramulla on Saturday, after which BJP leaders criticised him.

What Farooq Abdullah said

Farooq Abdullah said Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts on the Kashmir issue were helping preserve the identity and existence of the people of the Valley in the international community. He also said the Indian government was silent on Kashmir because of pressure from the international community.

According to Farooq, Pakistan was raising the Kashmir issue on international platforms and helping protect the people of the Valley. The BJP interpreted the remarks as support for Pakistan’s position.

BJP’s criticism

BJP national spokesperson R P Singh described Farooq Abdullah’s comments as supportive of Pakistan. He advised Farooq to look across the border at the situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Yamini Sharma, a member of the BJP’s national council, alleged that Farooq’s remarks insulted the Indian Constitution and the patriotic people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Demand for an apology

BJP legislator Yudhvir Shetty demanded that Farooq Abdullah apologise publicly. He said a person who speaks against the country should face a sedition case. Shetty also described the remarks in support of Pakistan as condemnable.

The BJP has said Pakistan has supported terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir for a long time and has tried to create unrest in the Valley through cross-border terrorism. India’s official position, as stated in the report, is that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country.

Omar Abdullah’s position

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah did not make a public comment during the controversy over Farooq Abdullah’s remarks.
