Democrats reportedly won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, ending unified Republican control of Congress and creating a major political setback for Donald Trump.

Democrats flip seats across the country

According to the report, Democrats flipped seven Senate seats and more than two dozen House seats. In Texas, James Talarico reportedly defeated Ken Paxton, ending a 38-year Republican Senate streak in the state. Gina Hinojosa reportedly defeated Governor Greg Abbott.

Adam Hamilton reportedly became the first Democrat elected to the Senate from Kansas since the Great Depression. In South Carolina, Annie Andrews reportedly secured a Democratic Senate victory described as the state’s first in nearly three decades.

New congressional leadership

The new Congress is expected to convene in January. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is positioned to become the first Black Speaker of the House, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is set to reclaim the majority leader’s role.

Jeffries said Americans “have had enough of the extremism, enough of the corruption” and pledged to focus on affordability, healthcare and oversight. Schumer declared, “relief is on the way.”

Greater scrutiny of the Trump administration

Democratic control would give the party subpoena power and control of congressional committees. That would allow lawmakers to increase scrutiny of the Trump administration, its nominees and its policies, and to block or slow some nominations.

Trump would retain his presidential veto and executive powers. He wrote on Truth Social that he “wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE”. Unified Republican government is expected to end in January 2027. Trump is described as remaining in the White House until January 2029 and as constitutionally barred from seeking a third term.

Republicans face post-Trump questions

The result has intensified debate within the Republican Party over its leadership and direction after Trump. Republican factions and potential future leaders are positioning themselves ahead of the 2028 presidential contest.

The report attributes the outcome to voter discontent over Trump’s handling of the economy, the war in Iran and governance. It also describes the Rockbridge Network, founded by Chris Buskirk, as an organisation coordinating donors, strategists, data analysts and grassroots activists.
