Neha Bora old video
The BJP has launched a political attack on All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora after an old, undated video featuring her remarks about priests, women’s safety and sexual assaults allegedly taking place inside temples resurfaced. BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari circulated the video on November 3.
In the video, Bora referred to the “Brahmanical system” and said, “It is the very same system under which even Brahmin women are unsafe and fall victim to rape. Priests commit rapes inside temples. We have witnessed such instances in Unnao and Kathua.”
She also said protection was necessary from what she described as the Brahmanical system. Bora is identified as AISA’s national president and a JNU PhD scholar. BJP leaders described the remarks as anti-Hindu and used them to attack Bora, Rahul Gandhi and the Opposition protests.
Former Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi criticised the comments despite belonging to a party in the Congress-led Opposition alliance. She said the video might be old but reflected a mindset claiming that rapes take place in temples and are committed by priests.
Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai also criticised the remarks. He said making such a sweeping statement was inappropriate, adding that every religion has both good and bad people and that such generalisations should be avoided.
Delhi-based advocate Amita Sachdeva said she had filed a complaint with the Station House Officer of Sansad Marg Police Station in New Delhi. She alleged that such sweeping accusations against an entire community of religious functionaries could create communal disharmony, promote enmity between groups and disturb public tranquillity.
“Freedom of speech is a constitutional right, not a licence to make irresponsible and inflammatory statements,” Sachdeva said.
The video surfaced amid Opposition-backed protests over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Bora had participated in protests at Jantar Mantar and was seen alongside Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during an October 12 Opposition march to the Supreme Court.
The source also says Bora undertook a 23-day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar alongside other student activists. BJP criticism of Bora had also been reported on October 15 over her call for regime change in India.
