Rafael Nadal Real Madrid board
Rafael Nadal is set to join Real Madrid’s board of directors after the club’s board agreed to submit his appointment for ratification. The decision followed a board meeting on Tuesday, and Real Madrid issued a statement on Wednesday. Nadal’s appointment must still be approved by the General Assembly of Delegated Members.
Nadal is already an honorary member of Real Madrid. His proposed appointment will now go before the club’s General Assembly of Delegated Members. The process will determine whether he formally takes up the board position.
The club said Nadal’s sporting and personal qualities reflect Real Madrid’s identity. It pointed to his humility, respect for opponents and commitment to charity, as well as his record of 22 Grand Slam titles, 92 singles titles, two Olympic gold medals, five Davis Cup triumphs with Spain and a world number one ranking.
“It is a source of immense pride for Real Madrid and for all our supporters that a figure of his sporting and personal stature … is to join our Board of Directors,” the club said. Real Madrid added that Nadal had embodied and championed values that form part of the club’s identity throughout his sporting career.
Nadal retired from tennis in November 2024. In a social media post, he thanked president Florentino Perez and the board for inviting him to join the club’s board of directors. “I have accepted this invitation with great enthusiasm, keen to learn and to contribute as much as I can,” Nadal wrote.
Nadal has been touted as a potential successor to Perez, although he has played down that prospect. Perez secured another four-year term in June after Real Madrid’s first contested presidential election in two decades. More than a third of voting members backed presidential challenger Enrique Riquelme, who opposed plans to bring outside investment into the member-owned club.
