CD Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel died on Tuesday after suffering serious injuries in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a Spanish second-division match. The incident took place towards the end of the game at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez stadium.

Collision late in the match

The teams were level at 2-2 when the collision occurred. Owono had raced out of his goal to clear the ball and was sent off after the incident. The match was subsequently abandoned.

According to Spanish media, De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated. He was taken to hospital and placed in intensive care. Tenerife later said that his neurological condition had worsened.

Tenerife announces death

Tenerife said De Miguel died at 8:00am local time, or 7am GMT. In a statement, the club said it was “broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe this is real” as it announced the “tragic death” of Jesus de Miguel Alameda.

De Miguel was 30. He joined Tenerife from Castellon in the summer of 2025 and helped the team gain promotion to the second division. He had been with Tenerife for just over a season.

Tributes across Spanish football

The Royal Spanish Football Federation postponed Tuesday’s Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches “as a gesture of respect and solidarity”. Real Madrid held a minute of silence before training, while Espanyol delayed the presentation of new coach Eder Sarabia until Wednesday.

The federation expressed its deepest sorrow at De Miguel’s passing. Tenerife also offered condolences to his family, close friends and supporters.

De Miguel began his career at youth level with Leganes and later played for several teams, including Unionistas de Salamanca, before signing for Castellon in 2023.
