Amazon software development layoffs
Amazon has laid off about 250 employees associated with software development, according to multiple media reports. The layoffs were reported on Wednesday. An Amazon spokesperson said the decision was taken to work more efficiently and align the company’s operations more closely with its roadmap.
The reported layoffs have primarily affected employees linked to software development. The number of employees affected has been put at about 250 in the reports.
Amazon said the move was intended to improve efficiency and maintain closer alignment with the company’s roadmap.
Amazon had also laid off about 1,000 employees from its core retail division at the beginning of this month, according to reports. The software development layoffs come after that reduction in the company’s workforce.
Sources cited in the reports said the layoffs could be linked to cost reduction as well as Amazon’s investment in artificial intelligence. The reports claimed that the company’s investment in AI exceeds $100 billion.
Amazon’s spokesperson did not directly link the layoffs to the company’s AI investment in the statement about the decision.
Amazon also announced on the same day that it would bring an Alexa-powered alarm clock and a photo frame to the market, according to the reports.
