US President Donald Trump has warned that Washington could launch another military operation against Iran as the war approaches its eight-month mark. Speaking at a rally in Florida and to reporters on the White House South Lawn on Friday, Trump said the United States could end the war quickly but questioned whether it should do so or allow the conflict to lose momentum.

Trump raises possibility of renewed action

Trump referred to a possible new operation as “another little Epic Fury”, the name given by the US military to its war against Iran. “We could end it very quickly,” he said, while also stating that the United States was getting everything it wanted.

The war began on February 28. A report published on Wednesday said the US and Israeli militaries had drawn up plans for renewed strikes after the midterm elections. Trump had earlier said that the United States would not attack Iran before next month’s midterm elections.

Iran warns of attacks on communications infrastructure

Two senior Iranian security officials said Tehran had prepared plans to target undersea communications cables in the Gulf if the United States and Israel attacked Iran again. Yadollah Javani, deputy head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, said seven major internet cables beneath the Strait of Hormuz could be targeted.

One Iranian official said Iran could seek to prevent repairs after cable cuts, potentially prolonging disruptions. Iranian officials also warned that US-linked digital infrastructure across the Gulf, as well as military bases, could be targeted.

Diplomatic warnings over wider fallout

Foreign ministers have warned that another offensive could widen the conflict and bring further economic consequences. Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said diplomacy and dialogue were the only way to end the conflict. Foreign ministers from Britain, France, Germany, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Italy held diplomatic discussions in Istanbul.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said further escalation between Iran and the United States would leave no winners and could have serious consequences for hydrocarbon prices. Undersea cables carry around 99 per cent of global internet traffic, according to the International Telecommunication Union. Alan Mauldin said less than 1 per cent of international bandwidth passes through the Strait of Hormuz, while routes through the Red Sea account for about 3 per cent of global international demand and roughly 10 per cent of traffic travelling between regions.

Iranian strikes hit two Amazon Web Services facilities in the United Arab Emirates in March and damaged infrastructure near one of its facilities in Bahrain, according to the reported account. Microsoft plans to invest more than $400 million in subsea and terrestrial connectivity across the Middle East by 2030.
