US intelligence agency director J. Clayton has warned Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Iran is in the final stages of planning lethal attacks against American citizens and officials abroad, according to a report based on a document dated October 23.

Warning to the Secretary of State

The document says Clayton warned Rubio that an Iranian plot against US citizens had reached its final stage. It also claims that Iran had significantly increased its activity to target American officials. Clayton did not specify who or which countries were allegedly being targeted.

Staff reductions at Middle East embassies

Sources said staff numbers were being reduced at four US embassies in the Middle East amid the pressure. Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have been mentioned in connection with the regional situation. After attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, several staff members of the US embassy in Saudi Arabia and their families had been instructed to return home.

Uncertainty in US-Iran relations

Diplomatic discussions between Washington and Tehran remain uncertain. At the same time, President Donald Trump has indicated that the United States could launch an attack on Tehran soon. The two countries have not been involved in a direct military confrontation in recent weeks.

The document also refers to the US midterm elections scheduled for November. The warning has emerged as diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran and security conditions in the Middle East remain under pressure.
