SRFTI campus closure
The campus of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) will remain closed till December 11, according to a decision announced by the institute authorities. Classes and all other activities will remain suspended, and students staying in hostels have been asked to leave the campus.
The decision means that academic activities, other work and mess services will remain closed during the period. Teaching had earlier been suspended till November 13. A notice issued subsequently extended the campus closure till December 11. Students staying in the hostels had been directed to leave the campus within 24 hours.
The decision comes amid clashes involving students and outsiders, students’ demands over security and protests on and around the campus. A clash between students and members of the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat was reported inside the campus on September 27. On October 4, a Hindutva organisation held a protest outside the campus gate.
A section of students boycotted classes over security concerns. They also held a sit-in outside the administrative building seeking the removal of Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera. Expelled students have been accused of physically assaulting the vice-chancellor and other officials, vandalising the vice-chancellor’s office and writing on walls or creating graffiti.
The authorities have said the campus will reopen once normalcy is restored. Until then, the campus, hostels, administrative building and mess services will remain closed.
