Cloud TV Tech Desk: Elon Musk has announced that X, formerly Twitter, will make its entire codebase open source in August after completing a comprehensive security review. The move is expected to make X the first major social media platform to publicly release its complete production code for independent scrutiny.
According to Musk, X will publish its full source code without exceptions once security vulnerabilities have been reviewed. The company also plans to invite independent third-party experts to verify that the released code matches the software actually running on X’s production systems.
The initiative is aimed at improving transparency and rebuilding public trust in the platform’s technology and moderation systems.
Making the platform open source could allow developers, researchers and cybersecurity professionals to inspect the platform, identify bugs and contribute improvements. It may also provide greater transparency into recommendation algorithms and content moderation practices.
However, experts note that releasing such a large production codebase could also introduce security challenges if vulnerabilities are discovered before they are addressed. X says a full security audit will be completed before publication.
X previously released part of its recommendation algorithm in 2023. Publishing the entire codebase would be a much larger step and could set a new benchmark for transparency in the social media industry.
If implemented as announced, the move may increase pressure on other major platforms to adopt similar transparency measures while strengthening collaboration with the global open-source community.
