Lionel Messi retires from international football
The end of an era has arrived. Argentina legend Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football. The 39-year-old made the announcement in an emotional Instagram post on Monday, bringing an end to his extraordinary career with the Argentina national team.
Messi’s decision comes weeks after Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. The match represented his final major opportunity to finish his international career with another World Cup triumph, but Spain denied Argentina the title.
In his emotional message, Messi acknowledged that retiring from the national team was an extremely difficult decision. He said it was a decision that hurt deeply, but he now understands that the time has come.
Messi also expressed his enduring love for representing Argentina and said he had given everything he had to the national team. He pointed to the emergence of a talented younger generation that deserves an opportunity to take the team forward.
Messi made his Argentina senior debut in 2005 and went on to represent his country at six FIFA World Cups.
His greatest international achievement came in Qatar in 2022, when he captained Argentina to the World Cup title. Four years later, Argentina again reached the final, but a 1-0 defeat to Spain meant Messi’s international career did not end with another world title.
Messi leaves the Argentina national team with extraordinary numbers. He has made 207 appearances and scored 125 goals for his country, making him Argentina’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer.
Under Messi’s leadership, Argentina won the Copa América in 2021 and 2024 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Those successes transformed his international legacy after years of near misses and final defeats.
Messi’s retirement from international football does not necessarily mean the end of his playing career, as he remains active at club level.
However, the Argentina No. 10 will no longer be seen leading the national team onto the pitch. His international career may not have ended with another World Cup trophy, but his legacy as one of Argentina’s greatest-ever footballers is firmly established.
