Modi Putin meeting Ukraine
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated India’s support for peaceful efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict during a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
Speaking in a joint statement after the meeting, Modi said India supports all peaceful methods to resolve the impasse between Russia and Ukraine. He stressed that resolving problems peacefully is essential for humanity.
Modi said the world needs to move from a situation of “endless war” towards an “end of war”. He added that it is humanity’s wish that the conflict should end as soon as possible.
The Prime Minister also referred to his earlier discussions with Putin on the Ukraine situation, saying that the Russian President had previously explained the developments to him in detail.
India’s latest message is consistent with Modi’s earlier assertion that this is not an era of war. New Delhi has repeatedly advocated dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward in resolving international conflicts.
The meeting took place during the ongoing SCO Summit in Bishkek. Apart from the Ukraine conflict, the two leaders reviewed India-Russia relations and broader global developments.
Defence, energy, trade and strategic cooperation remain important pillars of the India-Russia relationship. The meeting comes at a time when international efforts to promote a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict remain in focus.
Another important aspect of the meeting is Russian President Vladimir Putin’s expected visit to India. Putin is expected to travel to New Delhi in September for the BRICS Summit.
The Bishkek talks therefore assume significance for the next phase of India-Russia engagement. Ukraine, bilateral trade, energy cooperation and strategic ties are likely to remain important areas of discussion in the months ahead.
On Ukraine, India’s message remains consistent: the path from conflict to peace must be pursued through dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful resolution.
