Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has apologised to the Indian government over the presence of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), deepfake content and operational lapses across the company’s platforms, according to reports citing official sources.
The apology reportedly followed increased scrutiny from Indian authorities over online safety and content moderation. However, reports indicate that the apology was not specifically for the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook video, which had triggered a separate controversy.
Indian authorities have recently questioned Meta executives over several issues, including child safety, AI-generated deepfakes, algorithmic transparency and platform accountability.
The government has sought stronger safeguards against harmful content and faster compliance with legal takedown requests. Meta has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward child sexual abuse material and said it is strengthening its detection systems.
India is Meta’s largest market by users, making regulatory cooperation increasingly important for the company.
Industry analysts believe the apology reflects Meta’s efforts to improve relations with Indian authorities while addressing growing concerns over digital safety and platform governance. Discussions between the government and Meta are expected to continue as regulators seek greater accountability from major technology companies.
