Ashok Kumar Mukhopadhyay Leela Smriti Award 2026
Kolkata: Renowned Bengali author Ashok Kumar Mukhopadhyay has been awarded the Leela Smriti Award 2026 for his acclaimed novel Aatta Notar Surya, a research-based literary work that revisits the turbulent history of the Naxalite movement in West Bengal during the 1970s.
The award was presented at the fifth edition of the Leela Smriti Award ceremony organized by the Picnic Garden Leela Seva Society at Mahajati Annex Hall in Kolkata. The novel was recognized for its compelling portrayal of one of the most significant and controversial chapters in Bengal’s political history.
The Naxalite movement of the 1970s left an indelible mark on West Bengal, shaping the political consciousness of an entire generation. More than a political uprising, it represented a complex mix of idealism, rebellion, disillusionment, and violence. In Aatta Notar Surya, Mukhopadhyay explores these themes through extensive research and literary storytelling, capturing the aspirations of young activists, the conflict between the state and revolutionaries, and the tragic human cost of the movement.
Speaking after receiving the award, Mukhopadhyay said the novel was initially published as a serialized work in a Bengali magazine. He noted that the book seeks to present the political fervor of the era, the ideological commitment of students and youth, and the devastating consequences of prolonged conflict.
“The novel attempts to portray the emotional and political landscape of the 1970s with sensitivity and historical accuracy. It is an effort to create a meaningful dialogue between history and literature,” the author said.
As part of the event, Mukhopadhyay also delivered the Second Sachindramohan Bhattacharya Memorial Lecture on the topic ‘The Challenges of Writing Fact-Based Novels.’ During the lecture, he discussed the difficulties of balancing historical authenticity with creative expression while writing fiction rooted in real events.
The programme also featured a poets’ conference and a cultural performance attended by members of the literary and cultural community.
Dr. Soumya Bhattacharya, the driving force behind the Picnic Garden Leela Seva Society, said the award aims to honour writers who have made significant contributions to Bengali language and literature. He emphasized that literary works such as Aatta Notar Surya play a vital role in introducing younger generations to important historical events and encouraging a deeper understanding of the past.
The recognition of Aatta Notar Surya highlights the continuing relevance of literature in preserving historical memory and fostering critical engagement with Bengal’s socio-political legacy.
