Uber Train Booking
Uber is expanding beyond cabs, autos and bikes in India by adding train ticket booking to its growing travel ecosystem.
Users can now search for and book train journeys through the Uber app, reducing the need to switch between multiple travel applications while planning a trip. Uber’s train booking service is integrated with ixigo Group platforms, including ConfirmTkt, while intercity bus bookings are powered by AbhiBus.
The move brings Uber closer to becoming a broader mobility platform where users can manage different stages of a journey from a single app.
According to Uber, users can find the train booking facility by selecting the Train and Bus icon, which may appear under the Services section of the app.
Travellers can then enter their journey details, search for available trains, select a suitable journey and complete the payment.
Uber says its train offering uses trusted train partners through ConfirmTkt. The company is also promoting offers on Uber rides to and from train boarding and drop-off points.
This creates an integrated journey experience.
A passenger could, for example, book an Uber ride from home to the railway station, reserve a train journey and then arrange another Uber ride after arriving at the destination.
The model reflects Uber’s effort to move beyond point-to-point urban mobility and become a platform covering a larger part of a traveller’s journey.
Uber has also expanded into intercity bus ticketing in India.
The service is powered by AbhiBus, the bus business of ixigo. The partnership allows Uber users to access more than six lakh routes offered by over 6,200 bus operators across India, according to the partnership announcement.
Users can search for buses, view seat availability, select seats and complete their booking through the Uber app.
Different bus categories, including AC, sleeper and seater services, are available depending on the route and operator.
Uber’s own bus booking page says travellers can access thousands of private and government bus operators through the service. Users can select the Intercity Bus option, enter their journey information and complete payment after choosing a suitable service.
The expansion means Uber can now play a role in both short-distance urban transport and long-distance travel.
The biggest attraction of the new service is convenience.
India’s digital railway booking market is enormous, and travellers frequently use multiple apps for different parts of the same journey.
By integrating trains, buses and local rides, Uber is attempting to reduce that fragmentation.
The wider ixigo ecosystem already offers train-related utilities including PNR status, train running status, seat availability and other journey information.
However, travellers should understand the role Uber plays in these bookings.
Uber’s terms state that train and intercity bus booking services are provided through integrations with ixigo platforms, including ixigo, ConfirmTkt and AbhiBus. The actual transportation services are provided by independent third parties rather than Uber itself.
The strategy nevertheless represents an important expansion for Uber in India.
For a traveller, the proposition is straightforward: use one app to arrange a ride to the station, book a train or intercity bus and then arrange another local ride after reaching the destination.
That could make Uber increasingly useful not only as a ride-hailing service but also as a broader travel-planning platform.
As India’s online travel market continues to expand, integrations of this kind could also intensify competition among mobility and travel-booking platforms seeking to become the primary app travellers use throughout their journeys.
