ITTF lifts ban on Russian athletes
Cloud TV Sports Desk: The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has officially lifted restrictions on athletes holding Russian passports, allowing them to compete once again in ITTF Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis events (ITTF lifts ban on Russian athletes).
The decision was announced on Monday and marks a significant development in the international sporting landscape as governing bodies continue to revise policies regarding Russian athletes.
Under the revised policy, Russian passport holders will be eligible to participate in ITTF-sanctioned international competitions, including both table tennis and para table tennis events, subject to the federation’s eligibility requirements.
The move effectively ends the restrictions that had prevented Russian athletes from competing in ITTF events following sanctions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The ITTF’s announcement comes after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) eased restrictions on Russian athletes, allowing them to participate in qualification events and team competitions for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games under the IOC’s updated eligibility framework.
Several international sports federations have recently reviewed their participation rules in line with the IOC’s recommendations, paving the way for the gradual return of Russian athletes to global competition.
The decision is expected to strengthen competition at upcoming international tournaments by bringing back several experienced Russian players to the world stage.
