India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test
India strengthened their grip on the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo as Dhruv Jurel struck an unbeaten 115 and Rishabh Pant produced a fighting 63 on a rain-affected second day. India eventually declared their first innings at 503/9 before striking twice in Sri Lanka’s brief reply.
At stumps, Sri Lanka were 8/2 after just three overs, leaving the hosts 495 runs behind. India had resumed the day at 300/5 after Devdutt Padikkal’s century had provided the foundation on the opening day.
Jurel emerged as the star of the day with a composed and determined unbeaten 115. He faced 177 deliveries and hit nine fours and two sixes, producing the kind of lower-order innings that allowed India to cross the 500-run mark despite repeated interruptions caused by rain and bad light.
The wicketkeeper-batter reached his century with a risky single and then celebrated in a memorable fashion. He lifted his sleeve and displayed his biceps, revealing the message ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’. The celebration carried a personal meaning because Jurel’s father served in the Indian Army, while his grandfather was a farmer.
Jurel’s century was his second in Test cricket and put him alongside a select group of Indian batters who have scored a Test hundred in Sri Lanka from the lower middle order. His ability to remain unbeaten while wickets fell around him was crucial to India’s massive first-innings total.
Rishabh Pant also played a major role after returning to the crease following his forearm injury on the opening day. Batting alongside Jurel, Pant attacked the Sri Lankan pace attack and helped build a crucial 112-run partnership for the seventh wicket.
Pant eventually fell for 63, but his innings added momentum to India’s push beyond 500. His aggressive approach included a huge six against Lahiru Kumara that reportedly travelled into the adjoining area of the ground, forcing a replacement ball.
The innings also took Pant past MS Dhoni for the most Test runs by an Indian wicketkeeper in away matches. Pant’s tally moved to 2,534 away Test runs, surpassing Dhoni’s 2,496.
India’s lower-order resistance ensured that the hosts could not capitalise on early wickets. After Jurel’s century, India declared at 503/9 in 138 overs. Devdutt Padikkal had earlier scored 117 on the opening day, while Pant and captain Shubman Gill contributed half-centuries. Asitha Fernando was Sri Lanka’s most successful bowler with figures of 4/106.
Sri Lanka’s response lasted only three overs before rain and fading light interrupted play. Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar removed Lahiru Udara and Prabath Jayasuriya respectively, leaving the hosts at 8/2 at the close.
India had already taken a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series after winning the opening Test in Galle. With Sri Lanka 495 runs behind and only eight wickets remaining, India are firmly in control heading into the next phase of the match.
