Cloud TV Sports Desk: Spain’s historic FIFA World Cup 2026 triumph was overshadowed by dramatic scenes after the final whistle, as Argentina midfielder and Lionel Messi’s teammate Leandro Paredes was shown a red card for his involvement in a heated post-match confrontation.
Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time to lift the World Cup trophy. However, moments after the final whistle, tensions erupted when Argentine players confronted their Spanish counterparts during the celebrations.
Television footage showed Paredes grabbing Spanish defender Eric Garcia by the neck after an altercation involving several players. The incident quickly escalated into a mass confrontation, forcing teammates, coaching staff and security officials to intervene.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni rushed onto the pitch in an attempt to calm his players as tempers flared. After reviewing the incident, the referee issued Paredes a straight red card despite the match having already ended.
Argentina had already been reduced to ten men during the game after Enzo Fernandez received a red card late in the second half, making Spain’s task easier in extra time before Ferran Torres scored the winning goal.
Football pundits have strongly criticized Paredes’ conduct, describing it as unacceptable on the biggest stage in world football. FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee is expected to review the match officials’ report and video footage, with further sanctions against the Argentine midfielder remaining a possibility.
While Spain celebrated its fourth FIFA World Cup title, the ugly scenes after the final whistle became one of the biggest talking points of the tournament.
