Thierry Henry criticises Ronaldo
Cloud TV Desk: Portugal’s FIFA World Cup campaign began with disappointment as they were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo. While much of the attention was on Cristiano Ronaldo, who made history by appearing in his sixth World Cup, the 41-year-old superstar failed to make a significant impact.
Following the match, former France striker Thierry Henry delivered a sharp assessment of Ronaldo’s performance during an analysis segment on Fox Sports.
Henry highlighted a second-half attacking move involving Cristiano Ronaldo, Francisco Conceição and Bruno Fernandes. According to the former Arsenal and Barcelona forward, Ronaldo’s decision-making in that sequence hurt Portugal’s attacking rhythm.
“The team needs to score, not you,” Henry said while breaking down the play.
Explaining his criticism, Henry argued that Ronaldo should have made a run that dragged DR Congo’s defenders away from the central area, creating space for Bruno Fernandes to exploit. Instead, Ronaldo moved into the same channel as Fernandes, congesting the attack and making it easier for the Congolese defenders to win possession.
Henry believes Portugal could have created a clear goal-scoring opportunity had Ronaldo made the correct off-the-ball movement at the right moment.
The comments have sparked debate among football fans, with some agreeing that Portugal’s attack lacked fluidity, while others defended Ronaldo, pointing to his leadership and experience on the pitch.
Despite the criticism, Portugal remain one of the tournament favourites and will be looking for a stronger performance in their next World Cup fixture. However, Ronaldo’s form is likely to remain under the spotlight as the competition progresses.
