Cloud TV Sports Desk : Questions are being raised about FIFA’s ticketing strategy after thousands of empty seats were visible during a World Cup match at Guadalajara’s Akron Stadium, despite claims of unprecedented ticket demand for the tournament.
South Korea’s 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic should have been a celebration of World Cup football. Instead, much of the discussion centered on the noticeable number of vacant seats inside the stadium.
The issue has reignited concerns over FIFA ticket prices, with many fans and analysts arguing that expensive tickets are preventing stadiums from reaching full capacity.
Akron Stadium is one of the smallest venues being used during the World Cup, ranking as the second-smallest among the tournament’s 16 host stadiums. Even so, television broadcasts and photographs from the match showed significant sections of empty seats throughout the venue.
Ticket pricing has become a major talking point. Entry-level tickets for the match were reportedly priced at around $500, while seats in upper sideline sections cost approximately $400. Premium hospitality packages exceeded $5,000 per seat.
Critics argue that such pricing places World Cup matches beyond the reach of many ordinary football supporters.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently stated that demand for World Cup tickets had reached unprecedented levels.
“More than six million tickets have been sold so far,” Infantino said, describing demand as extraordinary.
However, the visual evidence from Akron Stadium appeared to contradict those claims, prompting fresh scrutiny of FIFA’s attendance figures and ticket sales policies.
FIFA officially announced an attendance of 44,985 spectators for the South Korea vs Czech Republic match. Akron Stadium has a reported capacity of 45,664.
The relatively small gap between the announced attendance and the stadium’s maximum capacity has led to further questions from observers.
A key point of confusion remains whether FIFA’s attendance figures represent tickets sold or the actual number of spectators who entered the stadium on match day. FIFA has not provided a detailed explanation regarding the methodology used to calculate attendance numbers.
This distinction is important because tickets purchased but not used can significantly inflate official attendance figures while leaving visible empty seats inside the venue.
The debate surrounding FIFA ticket prices is becoming increasingly prominent as the tournament progresses. Supporters’ groups have argued that football’s biggest event should remain accessible to fans from all economic backgrounds.
With more matches scheduled across multiple host cities, FIFA may continue to face criticism if high ticket prices contribute to partially filled stadiums, particularly at venues with relatively modest capacities.
As the World Cup continues, attention is likely to remain focused not only on the action on the pitch but also on whether FIFA can balance commercial success with fan accessibility.
