Sarfaraz Khan is set to make a return to the Indian Test squad after a gap of 19 months. The Mumbai batter has been selected as a replacement for B. Sai Sudharsan, who is expected to miss India’s upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka because of a stress injury to his right big toe.
The Test series is scheduled to begin on August 15. Sarfaraz is expected to join the Indian team in Colombo on Tuesday.
His return marks a significant moment in a Test career that appeared to have stalled after a promising beginning in 2024.
Sai Sudharsan’s inability to recover fully from his toe injury created a vacancy in India’s batting line-up. The selectors consulted the team management before deciding to bring Sarfaraz back into the squad. Several players were reportedly considered for the vacant position.
Sheikh Rasheed was among the contenders because of his ability to bat in the top order. Ruturaj Gaikwad was another strong option because of his experience and impressive first-class record. Both players had performed well during India’s A team’s recent tour of Sri Lanka.
However, the selectors eventually opted for Sarfaraz, giving the Mumbai batter another opportunity at the international level. His familiarity with Test cricket and strong domestic record are likely to have worked in his favour.
Sarfaraz made his Test debut in 2024 and initially showed considerable promise. He has played six Tests for India, all of them coming during 2024.
However, he subsequently found himself outside the national squad. He was notably not given an opportunity during India’s 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign. Despite the extended international absence, Sarfaraz continued to perform strongly in domestic cricket.
His consistent performances kept him in the selectors’ consideration and eventually helped him earn another opportunity. The upcoming Sri Lanka series could therefore become a crucial turning point in his career.
Sudharsan’s absence has created uncertainty around India’s No. 3 batting position. Sarfaraz could now find himself in contention for the role, depending on the combination chosen by the team management.
If selected in the playing XI, the Sri Lanka series will provide him with an opportunity to revive his Test career. His extensive first-class experience remains one of his biggest strengths.
However, returning to international cricket after a long gap comes with its own challenges. Sarfaraz will need to adapt quickly to the conditions and pressure of Test cricket.
Playing in Sri Lanka could also test his ability to deal with spin and varying match situations. For Sarfaraz, this is more than simply another squad selection. It represents an opportunity to restart a Test career that appeared to have lost momentum.
The Mumbai batter has already waited a long time for another chance.
Now, the challenge will be to convert that opportunity into substantial performances and establish himself once again in India’s Test plans.
