Shami Defends Virat Kohli
India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has come out in support of former captain Virat Kohli amid criticism over Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma’s frequent visits to spiritual leader Premanand Maharaj in Vrindavan.
The couple has often been seen visiting the spiritual guru, including after India’s recent ODI series against England. While their visits have been appreciated by many fans, they have also attracted criticism on social media.
Speaking during a recent interview, Shami described Kohli as someone who has always been sincere about his beliefs.
He said Kohli is passionate, disciplined and committed to whatever he believes in. According to Shami, the cricketer’s spiritual journey is not something new but a reflection of his personality and dedication.
The Indian pacer added that when someone has faith in a spiritual path, others should respect that decision instead of questioning it.
Shami also criticised those who target Kohli and Anushka over their visits to Premanand Maharaj.
He said no one has the right to object to another person’s faith. In his view, spirituality is a personal matter and should not become the subject of unnecessary public criticism.
His comments have received widespread attention, with many fans praising his balanced approach towards religious freedom and personal choice.
Responding to questions about whether Anushka Sharma influenced Kohli’s spiritual journey, Shami dismissed the controversy.
He said that if one partner inspires another to do something positive, there is nothing wrong with it. According to him, mutual influence in a relationship is completely natural.
Kohli has previously spoken about how spirituality has helped him remain mentally balanced during difficult phases of his cricket career. Shami’s remarks have once again shifted the discussion towards respecting personal beliefs instead of judging public figures for their private choices.
