The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2026 has announced a series of tributes to honour legendary West Indies cricketer Sir Garfield Sobers throughout the tournament. The competition began on 7 August 2026 and will conclude on 20 September 2026, with special ceremonies planned across all host nations.

CPL CEO Pete Russell confirmed the initiative through an official press release, describing Sobers as one of the greatest cricketers in the history of the sport.

One-Minute Applause Across Every Host Nation

As the CPL travels across the Caribbean, every host venue will observe a one-minute applause in memory of Sir Garfield Sobers.

The organisers said the tribute is intended not only to honour the legendary all-rounder but also to celebrate his lasting contribution to cricket and inspire younger generations.

The initiative will continue throughout the tournament, ensuring that fans across the Caribbean participate in remembering one of the game’s greatest icons.

Remembering Cricket’s Greatest All-Rounder

Sir Garfield Sobers is widely regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders in cricket history.

His remarkable achievements with both bat and ball, combined with exceptional fielding skills, made him a global sporting icon. Sobers also became the first cricketer to hit six sixes in an over in first-class cricket, a milestone that remains one of the sport’s most celebrated achievements.

He passed away on 17 July 2026 at the age of 89, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy that transformed Caribbean and world cricket.

More Tributes Planned for the Final

The CPL has confirmed that additional tribute events will be organised during the tournament final at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

Officials said the league remains committed to celebrating Sobers’ immense contribution to cricket beyond the one-minute applause observed during the competition.

Fans, former players and cricket administrators are expected to participate in the ceremonies, making the 2026 edition of the CPL a fitting celebration of one of cricket’s greatest legends.
