Speculation is growing over the future of BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, with reports suggesting that the Indian cricket board is considering appointing former batting great VVS Laxman as his successor.
Laxman currently heads the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and is regarded as one of the board’s most experienced cricket administrators. However, the BCCI has not made any official announcement regarding a change in the chief selector’s position.
Agarkar’s original tenure as chairman of the senior selection committee ended in June this year. The BCCI subsequently granted him a three-month extension.
Many expected his contract to continue until the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. However, fresh reports indicate that the board may now be considering a leadership change within the selection panel.
Laxman’s administrative experience, including his role at the Centre of Excellence and previous stints as India’s stand-in head coach, has made him one of the strongest candidates if a vacancy arises.
The speculation intensified during India’s ODI tour of England when reports claimed that Rohit Sharma could be nearing the end of his ODI career.
Some media reports suggested that the selection committee, led by Agarkar, had discussed future plans with head coach Gautam Gambhir and that the third ODI at Lord’s could be Rohit’s final appearance.
However, Rohit responded with a brilliant century in that match, leading to renewed debate over the reported plans and putting the selection committee under public scrutiny.
Following the speculation surrounding Rohit’s future, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia publicly clarified that Rohit Sharma remained an integral part of India’s ODI plans and dismissed reports claiming that the Lord’s ODI would be his farewell match.
Cricket observers viewed the statement as a sign of differing narratives within the administration. Nevertheless, there has been no official confirmation from the BCCI regarding Agarkar’s exit or Laxman’s appointment.
Until the board issues a formal announcement, the reports remain speculative, although discussions about the future leadership of India’s selection committee continue to attract significant attention.
