According to multiple media reports, the swearing-in ceremony of the new government could take place on May 9 at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several NDA Chief Ministers are expected to attend the event. However, the BJP has not yet officially announced either its Chief Ministerial candidate or the final cabinet list.
After the declaration of the Assembly election results, political developments in West Bengal have accelerated rapidly. Political observers and party insiders believe that Suvendu Adhikari is currently the strongest contender for the Chief Minister’s post. Reports published by several Bengali media outlets suggest that a number of prominent BJP leaders could become part of the new cabinet. The names being discussed include Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Shankar Ghosh, Rudranil Ghosh, Subrata Thakur and Swapan Dasgupta. Other names reportedly under consideration include Jewel Murmu, Sajal Ghosh, Deepak Barman, Naman Roy and Dipanjan Chakraborty.
Sources claim that the BJP is trying to maintain regional balance while shaping the cabinet. Leaders from North Bengal, Junglemahal, South Bengal and Kolkata are all expected to receive representation. At the same time, the party is reportedly focusing on including leaders from Scheduled Castes, tribal communities and women representatives in the ministry.
Political analysts believe the BJP may attempt to project an “inclusive cabinet” as part of its long-term strategy to strengthen its base in Bengal. The party is also likely to emphasize administrative experience and educational background while selecting ministers for key departments such as finance, education, industry and home affairs.
Meanwhile, speculation has also started regarding the Speaker’s post in the Assembly. According to political sources, Tapas Roy is among the names being discussed for the position.
Many observers believe that forming a government in Bengal will be one of the BJP’s biggest political and administrative challenges. After years of Trinamool Congress dominance in the state, the BJP will now face the responsibility of governing one of India’s most politically sensitive states.
The opposition has already begun attacking the BJP over the speculation surrounding ministerial positions. Several leaders from the All India Trinamool Congress have alleged that internal lobbying for cabinet posts has already begun within the BJP. However, BJP leaders have dismissed those allegations.
For now, Bengal politics remains focused on two crucial questions — who will ultimately become Chief Minister, and which leaders will secure places in the new cabinet. Political observers believe the answers may emerge within the next few days.
