Jadavpur University Clash
The political tension at Jadavpur University has now reached the Calcutta High Court. A clash broke out on the campus on Wednesday night during a dispute over a General Body meeting.
Members of the Students’ Federation of India and other Left student organisations allegedly clashed with activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. Several students were reportedly injured during the confrontation.
On Thursday, the matter was brought before the Calcutta High Court. A plea was made seeking an urgent hearing by linking the incident to an existing case concerning the university.
However, the Division Bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty declined to entertain the request for an urgent hearing. The court advised the petitioner to file a fresh case specifically concerning the latest incident.
The immediate trigger for Wednesday night’s tension was a General Body meeting at Jadavpur University.
ABVP members questioned the legitimacy of holding such a meeting, arguing that there is currently no student union at the university. According to ABVP members, they protested against the meeting and alleged that a large group of students subsequently confronted them.
The organisation claimed that around 70 to 80 people attacked its members. The confrontation soon escalated into a physical clash on the campus.
Left student organisations have also raised allegations against the opposing side. The incident has therefore become another flashpoint in the long-running political rivalry between Left-backed student groups and ABVP on the campus.
The exact circumstances leading to the clash and the responsibility of individual participants are likely to remain a matter of investigation.
The Wednesday night clash led both sides to announce protest programmes on Thursday.
ABVP supporters gathered near Jadavpur Police Station and planned a march from the Gariahat-Golpark area. SFI, meanwhile, announced a gathering near the 8B bus stand.
With rival groups planning programmes in and around the university, concerns grew over the possibility of further confrontation.
Police presence was subsequently increased around Jadavpur University, 8B and Golpark. Barricades were also put up at several locations to control movement and prevent the two groups from coming face to face.
SFI has also issued a strong political message, saying it would not accept attempts by any group to dominate the university campus.
The High Court development has added another dimension to the controversy. While the urgent hearing plea was not entertained on Thursday, the court has left the door open for the issue to be raised through a fresh case.
Attention will now remain focused on whether a new petition is filed and whether further clashes occur during the rival protest programmes.
