Cloud TV Desk: The suspense surrounding West Bengal’s next Chief Minister has finally come to an end. Suvendu Adhikari has officially been elected as the new Chief Minister of West Bengal after being unanimously chosen as the BJP Legislature Party leader during a crucial meeting of newly elected MLAs in Kolkata on Friday.

The announcement was formally made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, marking a historic political moment as the BJP prepares to form a full-majority government in West Bengal for the first time.

Political observers believe the decision was largely expected. Since the beginning of the Assembly election campaign, Suvendu Adhikari had emerged as one of the BJP’s strongest faces in Bengal politics. His political stature increased significantly after defeating Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, followed by another major victory over the Trinamool Congress in Bhabanipur.

According to party sources, all 207 winning BJP legislators attended Friday’s meeting. Amit Shah was present as the central observer, while Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi attended as co-observer. Several MLAs reportedly proposed Suvendu’s name, which was later approved unanimously.

The announcement triggered celebrations among BJP workers and supporters across the state. Victory rallies, fireworks and celebrations were reported from multiple districts, while large crowds gathered outside the BJP’s state headquarters in Kolkata.

Political analysts say appointing Suvendu Adhikari as Chief Minister is a strategically important move for the BJP. Originally a senior Trinamool Congress leader from Purba Medinipur, Suvendu later joined the BJP and became one of the party’s most influential opposition leaders in Bengal.

Experts believe his organizational strength, grassroots influence and administrative experience played a key role in the party’s decision. The BJP is also believed to have prioritized projecting a strong regional Bengali face to lead the state government.

Sources indicate that the swearing-in ceremony of the new government may take place on Saturday at Brigade Parade Ground. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states are expected to attend the event.

Administrative preparations have already begun ahead of the new government taking charge. Reports suggest work is underway at the historic Writers’ Building to prepare the Chief Minister’s office for the incoming administration.

Political commentators believe the BJP’s rise to power in West Bengal is not only a major state-level development but also a significant event in national politics. By ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule, the BJP has dramatically altered Bengal’s political landscape.

Attention is now focused on Suvendu Adhikari’s first major decisions as Chief Minister and the formation of his cabinet, which could shape the future direction of politics and governance in West Bengal.
