Indian Tea Grower
Tension has intensified along the India-Bangladesh border after an Indian tea grower from Jalpaiguri was allegedly kidnapped by a group of Bangladeshi criminals. The alleged kidnappers have reportedly demanded the release of a Bangladeshi national detained by Indian authorities in connection with suspected smuggling.
A second flag meeting between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Bangladesh border forces was held on Sunday afternoon. However, the meeting reportedly ended without any breakthrough.
The development has triggered anger and concern among residents of the Chouhati area under Kukurjan Gram Panchayat in Jalpaiguri.
Dipankar Ghosh, a resident of Tasarpara in Chouhati, Jalpaiguri, was allegedly taken away from a tea garden located close to the international border.
According to local accounts, the incident took place when the alleged kidnappers entered Indian territory and abducted him. He was subsequently taken towards Bangladesh, residents claimed.
The alleged kidnappers have reportedly demanded the release of Tajimuddin Islam, a 60-year-old Bangladeshi national who was detained by the BSF on August 6.
Tajimuddin was allegedly intercepted while entering India through a cut section of the border fencing in the Chouhati area. Authorities have alleged that he was linked to cross-border smuggling activities.
The BSF subsequently handed him over to Rajganj police. He is currently lodged in Jalpaiguri Central Jail.
According to local sources, the demand for his release is being linked to the alleged kidnapping of Dipankar. The claim, however, has not been independently verified.
The incident has raised serious concerns over the security of civilians living and working close to the international border.
A flag meeting was held between the border forces of India and Bangladesh on Saturday following the alleged abduction. However, the meeting reportedly failed to produce any immediate solution.
A second meeting was held on Sunday afternoon. Local sources said that the talks again failed to resolve the issue.
The alleged demand to release a person facing legal proceedings in India has complicated efforts to secure Dipankar’s return.
Rajganj MLA Dinesh Sarkar visited the border area on Sunday and spoke with BSF personnel as well as local residents.
Sarkar said the Bangladeshi side was allegedly imposing conditions for the return of the Indian citizen. He also said that the BSF was making efforts to resolve the situation.
The MLA criticised the alleged crossing of the international border and kidnapping of an Indian citizen. He argued that an ordinary civilian should not be used as leverage to secure the release of another person.
The incident has also sparked questions about the security of Indian villages and tea gardens located close to the international boundary.
Jalpaiguri MP Dr Jayanta Kumar Roy has said that he will bring the matter to the attention of the Union Home Ministry and the Ministry of External Affairs.
The MP said efforts had already begun to secure Dipankar’s return and expressed hope that he would be brought back soon.
Residents of Chouhati have demanded immediate action to ensure Dipankar’s safe return. They have also urged the authorities to strengthen security in the border areas.
There are also allegations that elements of the Bangladeshi border security establishment may have assisted the kidnappers. However, there is currently no independently verified evidence publicly available to establish that allegation.
The case has therefore emerged as a sensitive border-security issue involving an alleged kidnapping, a detained Bangladeshi national and a demand for his release.
For the family and residents of Chouhati, the immediate priority remains the safe return of Dipankar Ghosh.
Attention is now focused on further communication between the BSF and Bangladesh’s border authorities and on the steps Indian authorities take to secure the kidnapped citizen’s return.
