West Bengal Police have arrested Minar Mondal following the recovery of approximately ₹28.5 crore in cash and nearly 15 kilograms of gold from his residence in Birbhum district. The seizure was made during a late-night raid that followed the investigation into a robbery case in Mohammad Bazar. The recovered cash and gold were packed inside trunks and cupboards, making it one of the largest such recoveries in recent years.

Robbery Probe Uncovers Bigger Network

According to police, the breakthrough came after seven robbery suspects were arrested earlier in the week. During interrogation, investigators received information that led them to Mondal’s residence. Officers then carried out an extensive search operation lasting several hours.

Senior police officials said the recovered assets were seized and transported to the government treasury under tight security. Investigators are examining financial records and other evidence to determine the ownership and source of the recovered wealth. Police have also alleged that the assets may be linked to a criminal syndicate, though the investigation is ongoing.

Questions Over Source of Wealth

Police said Mondal was questioned repeatedly regarding the source of the money and gold. Officials claim he acknowledged links between the seized assets and an alleged criminal network. However, his family has disputed knowledge of the recovered wealth, with his son stating that they were unaware such a large quantity of cash and gold was stored inside the house.

The investigation will now focus on tracing the financial trail, identifying possible beneficiaries, and determining whether additional individuals were involved. Authorities are also expected to examine bank records, property transactions and business links as part of the probe. It is important to note that these allegations remain under investigation and have not been adjudicated in court.

Political Attention on the Case

The case has attracted political attention because investigators have described Mondal as a relative of businessman Tulu Mondal, who has been identified by police as being close to former Birbhum political strongman Anubrata Mondal. Police presented the accused before a court after the arrest, while the investigation continues into the origin of the recovered assets and any possible criminal connections.

Officials have indicated that further arrests or searches cannot be ruled out as investigators analyse the evidence collected during the operation.
