Bengal Woman Trafficked
A young woman from West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali was allegedly trafficked to Bangladesh after being lured with the promise of a high-paying job in Tamil Nadu. Kolkata Police have launched a detailed investigation into what is suspected to be a cross-border human trafficking network.
According to investigators, the woman had moved to Kolkata and was searching for employment. During her job hunt, she reportedly met a man through Facebook who offered her a lucrative job in Tamil Nadu.
She left her residence on 1 July, after which contact with her gradually stopped. Concerned family members initially filed a missing person complaint before the case developed into a suspected trafficking investigation.
The breakthrough came on 18 July, when the victim’s brother received a phone call from a woman identifying herself as Lamia Akter in Bangladesh.
According to the complaint, the caller said the victim had been trafficked across the border through an illegal route, held captive and subjected to physical and mental abuse. The victim reportedly escaped and was admitted to a hospital in Gopalganj, Bangladesh, from where she managed to contact her family. The phone number later became unreachable.
Kolkata Police’s Detective Department has taken over the investigation after a kidnapping and human trafficking case was registered.
Officials are tracing digital evidence, including the Facebook account and mobile number used in the alleged crime. Through India’s Ministry of External Affairs, contact has also been established with Bangladesh Police, while Tamil Nadu Police have been asked to assist in the investigation.
Investigators suspect that an organised cross-border trafficking network may be involved. The search for the accused is continuing.
