Dhupguri TMC Leader
A political controversy has erupted in Dhupguri in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district after a Trinamool Congress leader was allegedly seen warning Bengali-speaking residents to leave North Bengal by August 15.
The alleged remarks were made in a video posted on social media by TMC leader Sukdeb Roy, according to the complaint filed by local residents.
The video subsequently went viral, triggering strong reactions from opposition parties and sections of the local community.
A group of youths has reportedly lodged a written complaint at Dhupguri police station against Roy. Police sources have also indicated that a suo motu case has been registered in connection with the matter.
The controversy comes just days before Independence Day and has raised concerns over social harmony and political rhetoric in North Bengal.
According to the allegations, Sukdeb Roy posted a video on his social media profile in which he warned Bengali residents living in North Bengal to leave the region by August 15.
The alleged remarks triggered widespread discussion after the video circulated on social media.
The complaint filed by local residents claims that the comments could create fear and insecurity among people living in the region.

Another major point of controversy is the alleged reference to the 2002 KLO attack on a CPI(M) party office in Dhupguri.
The attack took place on August 17, 2002. Several people were killed in the incident, according to accounts cited by local political representatives.
The attack remains part of Dhupguri’s political memory. Local CPI(M) representatives have claimed that marks of the firing can still be seen on a steel cupboard inside the party office.
The reference to the old incident in the alleged recent statement has therefore caused particular concern.
CPI(M)’s Dhupguri area committee secretary Jayanta Majumdar has criticised the alleged remarks. He accused the speaker of attempting to damage communal harmony and create an atmosphere of division.
The CPI(M) has also called for an investigation into whether the remarks have any connection with separatist organisations.
The party has warned that any attempt to create an atmosphere supporting the division of Bengal would be opposed through political mobilisation.
The allegations remain subject to investigation, and no evidence has been publicly established linking Roy to any separatist organisation.
The BJP has also strongly criticised the alleged remarks.
Madhab Chandra Roy, the BJP’s Jalpaiguri district secretary, accused Sukdeb Roy of making provocative statements on social media in the past.
He alleged that such remarks could damage social harmony and intensify political divisions in North Bengal.
The BJP has demanded swift administrative action and called for an investigation into the intention behind the alleged statement.
The controversy comes against the backdrop of longstanding political debates over North Bengal’s identity, development, language and demands for greater regional autonomy.
The latest incident has added another sensitive dimension to those debates.
However, the Trinamool Congress has not yet issued a detailed official response to the controversy. Sukdeb Roy himself has also not publicly explained the alleged remarks.
Police action will now be crucial in determining whether the video has been presented accurately, what the full context of the statement was and whether any criminal offence has been committed.
