Singur Chemical Park
West Bengal BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya has written to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari urging the state government to pursue the establishment of a national Chemical Park in Singur under the Centre’s “Bhavya Rasayan” initiative. The proposal aims to position West Bengal as a strong contender in the Union government’s plan to develop three chemical parks through Centre-State collaboration.
According to Bhattacharya’s letter, the Union government intends to develop three large chemical parks across India through a competitive selection process involving state governments. He described the scheme as a rare opportunity for West Bengal to secure a major industrial project.
The BJP leader stated that the project could receive an allocation of around ₹1,500 crore while also attracting substantial private investment. He argued that the development would strengthen the state’s industrial ecosystem and generate significant employment opportunities.
Bhattacharya has identified Singur as his preferred location for the proposed Chemical Park. He also suggested Haldia, Durgapur and Raghunathpur as alternative locations that possess industrial potential.
He believes that choosing Singur would carry symbolic importance because the area has long been associated with West Bengal’s industrial debate following the exit of the Tata Nano project. According to him, a new flagship industrial project at Singur would send a positive signal to domestic and international investors that the state is once again ready to welcome large-scale investments.
The proposal comes as discussions on industrial development continue in West Bengal. Bhattacharya argued that the Chemical Park could become a catalyst for manufacturing growth, create thousands of jobs and improve the state’s competitiveness in attracting industrial investments.
At present, the proposal remains at the recommendation stage. The next steps will depend on the West Bengal government’s response and whether the state secures a place in the Centre’s competitive selection process for the upcoming Chemical Parks.
