Cloud TV Desk: Former U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has reignited the debate over the origins of COVID-19 by releasing a series of declassified documents on her final day in office. Gabbard alleges that former top U.S. health official Dr. Anthony Fauci played a role in directing U.S. taxpayer funding toward research at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology, a laboratory frequently linked to theories about the pandemic’s origins.
According to Gabbard, the documents show that millions of dollars in U.S. funding supported research involving bat coronaviruses at the Wuhan facility. She specifically referenced “gain-of-function” research, a controversial scientific practice that can involve modifying viruses to better understand their transmissibility or potential risks. Critics argue such research may create significant biosecurity concerns if not properly regulated.
The newly released records also allege that Fauci influenced intelligence assessments regarding the origins of COVID-19 and that efforts were made to downplay the lab-leak theory. Gabbard further claimed that information concerning the Wuhan research program was not fully disclosed to the public and that questions raised by whistleblowers were not adequately investigated.
The allegations have once again intensified a long-running dispute over whether COVID-19 originated from a laboratory accident or emerged naturally through animal-to-human transmission. U.S. intelligence agencies and scientific experts have remained divided on the issue. While some agencies have expressed varying degrees of confidence in the lab-leak hypothesis, others continue to consider natural origins a plausible explanation.
As of now, Fauci has not publicly responded to the latest document release. However, he has consistently denied funding dangerous gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and has defended the scientific decisions made during the pandemic.
The release of these documents is expected to fuel renewed political and scientific scrutiny in the United States. Supporters of Gabbard’s position argue that greater transparency is needed regarding pandemic-related research, while critics caution that the allegations require independent verification before definitive conclusions can be drawn.
