A US federal court has ordered the deportation of Indian national Mitul Patel after sentencing him in a visa fraud conspiracy involving fraudulent U Visa applications. Patel pleaded guilty to participating in a scheme that staged fake armed robberies to help applicants falsely qualify for immigration benefits under the U Visa programme.
The case is part of a wider federal investigation into an organised immigration fraud network that allegedly exploited a humanitarian visa programme designed to protect genuine crime victims.
According to US prosecutors, members of the conspiracy arranged staged armed robberies at businesses. Individuals seeking immigration benefits would pose as victims and later use police reports and other official documents to apply for U Visas.
The U Visa is intended for foreign nationals who become victims of serious crimes in the United States and assist law enforcement authorities during investigations and prosecutions.
Patel admitted his role in one such staged incident, acknowledging that the robbery had been planned to support a fraudulent immigration application. Prosecutors argued that such schemes undermine the credibility of a programme meant to assist genuine victims of crime.
The federal court sentenced Patel to one day in prison, imposed a $1,000 fine, and ordered that he be deported from the United States after completing his sentence.
Officials said immigration fraud remains a high enforcement priority, particularly when criminal conspiracies attempt to misuse humanitarian visa programmes.
The court noted that preserving the integrity of the immigration system requires strict action against those who obtain benefits through deception.
