Kerala Sailor Akhil Joyan Killed
Cloud TV Desk: A 26-year-old Indian merchant navy sailor from Kerala, Akhil Joyan, was killed in a Russian missile strike on a commercial vessel near Ukraine, just days before he was due to get married.
According to reports, Akhil was serving aboard a merchant ship operating near the Ukrainian port of Odesa when it came under attack. The strike caused severe damage to the vessel, and Akhil lost his life in the incident.
Family members said Akhil had been preparing to return home for his wedding after completing his assignment at sea. Instead, they received the devastating news of his death, turning what was meant to be a celebration into mourning.
The Ministry of External Affairs is coordinating with the relevant authorities to facilitate the return of the mortal remains and extend assistance to the bereaved family.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by commercial shipping in the Black Sea region, where the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues to threaten civilian maritime traffic. Security experts warn that merchant vessels operating near conflict zones remain at significant risk despite international efforts to safeguard shipping routes.
Akhil’s death is a stark reminder of the human cost of war, extending far beyond the battlefield and affecting innocent civilians and seafarers working thousands of miles away from home.
