Tension gripped the University of Dhaka after a clash broke out between activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s student wing, Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal, and the Jamaat-e-Islami-backed Islami Chhatra Shibir at Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah Hall.

The confrontation occurred during a meeting of an inquiry committee investigating allegations involving two visitors staying in a university residential room. The dispute soon escalated into physical violence, prompting intervention by university authorities.

Probe Meeting Turns Violent

According to university sources, an inquiry committee was formed after allegations surfaced regarding the conduct of two visitors staying inside a room at Shahidullah Hall.

During the committee meeting, members of Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir engaged in a heated argument, which later turned into a physical clash.

Chhatra Dal convener Mosaddiq Al Haque (Shanto) alleged that Shibir members attempted to suppress the investigation and protect the hall’s Assistant General Secretary (AGS). He claimed that Chhatra Dal members were attacked after raising objections, leaving several students injured.

Counter Allegations by Chhatra Shibir

Shahidullah Hall General Secretary Towkir Hasan rejected the allegations made by Chhatra Dal.

He claimed that members of Chhatra Dal entered the inquiry meeting without permission and attempted to influence the investigation. According to him, they later created tension over photographs being taken and assaulted a Shibir activist.

Towkir also alleged that Chhatra Dal activists later attacked the office of the hall provost.

The conflicting claims have made the incident highly controversial, with both student organisations accusing each other of initiating the violence.

University Launches Investigation

Dhaka University Proctor Israfil Ratan confirmed that a temporary disturbance had occurred at Shahidullah Hall.

He said a mobile team of assistant proctors was immediately dispatched to the hall, bringing the situation under control. The university has launched an official investigation and assured that appropriate action will be taken after reviewing the inquiry report.

Meanwhile, rumours circulating on social media regarding the resignation of the hall provost were dismissed by university officials. Principal Administrative Officer Billal Hossain said the administration had received no resignation letter and that no official communication had been made regarding such a decision.

The incident comes shortly after another controversy involving similar allegations at Masterda Surya Sen Hall, raising fresh concerns about campus discipline, student politics and administrative oversight at one of Bangladesh’s leading universities.
