A 17-year-old Indian-origin teenager has been accused of killing his mother and younger brother at their family home in Acton, Massachusetts.
The teenager, identified as Arjun Aravind, was arrested following an overnight manhunt. Police allege that he fatally assaulted his mother and brother before leaving the house in his mother’s Honda Accord.
The victims have been identified as 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan and her 14-year-old son, Siddarth Aravind.
The incident has attracted widespread attention because investigators have also discovered that Arjun allegedly used the internet and ChatGPT to explore fantasies and theoretical ideas involving the killing of his family.
The killings took place at the family’s home on Martha Lane in Acton, approximately 48 kilometres from Boston, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
The crime came to light after a tutor arrived at the house shortly after 6:30 pm on Tuesday for a scheduled appointment. When she could not enter the house, she contacted Arjun’s father.
His father also failed to reach the family and contacted the Acton Police Department, requesting a welfare check.
When officers arrived, they found both Sudha Venkatesan and Siddarth Aravind dead inside the property. The mother’s body was found in the basement, while the teenager’s body was discovered on the first floor.
Both victims had visible signs of trauma. However, officials have not yet released the exact cause and manner of death. Investigators are also yet to establish what weapon, if any, was used in the killings.
Police subsequently discovered that Arjun and his mother’s Honda Accord were missing.
Authorities launched a search for the teenager and alerted other law enforcement agencies. He was eventually located in Wayland, Massachusetts, early Wednesday morning.
Police found him inside the missing vehicle at a parking lot while responding to an unrelated alarm. He was taken into custody without incident.
The investigation took an unexpected turn when authorities revealed information about Arjun’s online activity.
The Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office said the investigation indicated that Arjun had recently displayed concerning behaviour. Officials alleged that he had used the internet and ChatGPT to search for theoretical ideas or fantasies about killing his family.
Investigators also said Arjun had asked the AI chatbot to help create stories resembling Gothic novels. He reportedly used the chatbot to ask questions and develop fictional characters.
Authorities have not said that ChatGPT caused the killings. The chatbot-related activity is being examined as part of the broader investigation into the teenager’s behaviour and possible motive.
The case also raises wider questions about the use of generative AI by vulnerable users and the safeguards required when users discuss violent or dangerous subjects.
Arjun is facing two murder charges, along with multiple assault and battery charges. He has also been charged with using a vehicle without authority and motor vehicle theft.
Because of his age, the legal proceedings involve both juvenile and adult-court jurisdiction. According to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the juvenile court does not have jurisdiction over murder charges, meaning the murder and related assault charges were expected to proceed in Concord District Court.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are expected to examine the teenager’s digital activity, the circumstances inside the home and the events leading up to the deaths.
For now, the allegations remain subject to the judicial process, and Arjun Aravind has not been convicted of the charges.
