Cloud TV Desk: Preparations for FIFA World Cup 2026 are now moving into a crucial phase, with work officially beginning on the installation of the playing surface at MetLife Stadium. The stadium, which will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup final along with eight tournament matches, is one of the centerpiece venues for football’s biggest event.
The 2026 edition of the World Cup will be the largest in history, featuring 48 national teams and 104 matches across 16 venues in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The tournament is scheduled to begin on June 12.
FIFA is using two different types of grass surfaces for the tournament depending on climate conditions and stadium environments. Warm-weather venues will feature Bermuda grass, while cooler and indoor venues will use a blend of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass.
Warm-season venues selected for Bermuda grass include East Rutherford in New Jersey, Guadalajara and Monterrey in Mexico, Kansas City in Missouri, Miami Gardens in Florida and Santa Clara in California.
Meanwhile, cooler-climate and indoor stadiums such as Arlington, Atlanta, Foxborough, Houston, Inglewood, Mexico City, Philadelphia, Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver will use the Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass combination.
According to FIFA, preparation for the playing surfaces actually began nearly 10 months ago. Grass production and harvesting have been underway at 10 specialized turf farms across Canada, Mexico and the United States. The grass is being prepared not only for the main stadiums but also for official training facilities.
Experts believe pitch quality will play a major role during the tournament. High-quality natural grass surfaces help improve ball movement, player speed and overall gameplay while also reducing the risk of injuries. That is why FIFA is placing major emphasis on field preparation ahead of the tournament.
The beginning of grass installation at MetLife Stadium is being viewed as a significant milestone in the overall World Cup preparation process. With the final set to take place there, excitement surrounding the venue and the tournament continues to grow among football fans worldwide.
