Cloud TV Desk: Following the BJP’s historic victory in West Bengal, political attention is now focused on one key question — who will become the state’s next Chief Minister? Amid intense speculation, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is arriving in Kolkata on Friday to hold a crucial meeting with the BJP’s newly elected MLAs. According to party sources, the meeting is expected to determine the BJP Legislature Party leader, who is likely to become the next Chief Minister of West Bengal.
Reports suggest that the swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP government could take place on Saturday at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. Before that, Shah is expected to meet all 207 winning BJP legislators. The BJP central leadership has appointed him as the official observer for the selection process. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will reportedly assist him as co-observer.
Political analysts believe the meeting is extremely significant because the elected Legislature Party leader usually assumes the Chief Minister’s position. As a result, the long-running speculation over Bengal’s next CM could finally end after this meeting.
Among all the names being discussed, Suvendu Adhikari is currently considered the strongest contender. Since defeating Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, Adhikari has emerged as one of the BJP’s most influential faces in Bengal politics.
However, Suvendu is not the only name under discussion. Other leaders reportedly being considered for key leadership roles include Dilip Ghosh, Samik Bhattacharya, Agnimitra Paul and Swapan Dasgupta.
Political observers believe the BJP may take into account factors such as administrative experience, organizational strength, regional balance and caste representation before finalizing its leadership structure in Bengal.
Preparations for the formation of the new government have reportedly already begun at the administrative level. According to reports, renovation and preparation work is underway at the historic Writers’ Building for the incoming Chief Minister. The new CM may also make a symbolic visit to the state secretariat soon after taking oath.
The BJP’s victory is being described as politically historic because this is the first time the party is set to form a full-majority government in West Bengal. By winning 207 out of 294 Assembly seats, the BJP ended the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress in the state.
Analysts say Bengal is now one of the BJP’s most strategically important states, which explains why the party’s central leadership is directly supervising the government formation process. Amit Shah’s appointment as observer is also being viewed as a sign of the importance the BJP leadership is placing on West Bengal.
For now, all eyes remain on Kolkata as the state waits to learn the identity of its next Chief Minister.
