Cloud TV Desk: After days of intense political uncertainty and dramatic negotiations, actor-turned-politician Vijay has finally secured the numbers required to form the government in Tamil Nadu.
The breakthrough came after Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) announced unconditional support to Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). With the backing of VCK and other supporting parties, the TVK-led alliance has now crossed the crucial majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.
Political observers believe the development has significantly strengthened Vijay’s claim to form the next government in Tamil Nadu.
How TVK Reached The Majority Mark
In the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, TVK emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats. However, the party initially fell short of the majority figure of 118 in the 234-member House.
The political equation began changing after the Congress party decided to support TVK. Later, Left parties including CPI and CPI(M) also extended support to Vijay’s camp.
The final breakthrough came when VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan announced unconditional backing for TVK. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) also extended support, pushing the alliance tally beyond the required number. Reports suggest the TVK-led alliance now enjoys the backing of around 120 MLAs.
Why VCK’s Support Is Politically Important
VCK is considered an influential regional force in Tamil Nadu politics, especially among Dalit voters. Political analysts believe the support is important not only numerically but also socially and symbolically.
According to reports, Thirumavalavan said the party decided to support TVK to avoid political instability and the possibility of President’s Rule in Tamil Nadu.
At the same time, VCK clarified that its support for TVK does not mean a complete break from its earlier political alignment with the DMK-led secular alliance.
Governor’s Role Under Spotlight
Over the past few days, Vijay reportedly met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar multiple times seeking an invitation to form the government.
However, the Governor had insisted on written proof of majority support before formally inviting TVK to take charge.
This led to political controversy, with TVK supporters accusing Raj Bhavan of delaying the process despite Vijay emerging as the leader of the single largest party. Congress leaders also criticised attempts to “block” the formation of a TVK-led government.
Now, with VCK and IUML formally submitting letters of support, the deadlock appears to have eased considerably.
A New Era In Tamil Nadu Politics?
For decades, Tamil Nadu politics revolved around two dominant Dravidian parties — DMK and AIADMK. Vijay’s rise has dramatically altered that political equation.
Launched only two years ago, TVK has already emerged as a major political force capable of challenging the state’s traditional power structure.
Political experts say Vijay has now passed his first major political test. The next challenge will be transforming electoral popularity into a stable and effective administration.
Speculation is already growing that Vijay could soon be invited to take oath as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
