Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi met a group of student protesters on Wednesday and accused the government of intimidating young demonstrators (Rahul Gandhi Protest).
According to Rahul Gandhi, a 15-year-old girl was allegedly forced to apologise publicly, while several protesters were threatened at their homes. He described the reported incidents as attempts to silence young voices participating in peaceful protests.
Rahul Gandhi criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, arguing that democratic societies must protect the right to peaceful protest rather than suppress dissent.
He said students should not face intimidation or pressure for expressing their views and urged the government to listen to their concerns instead of pursuing punitive measures. Congress leaders have repeatedly claimed that students involved in recent demonstrations have faced police action and harassment.
The issue has intensified the political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the Congress.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had indicated that punishing student protesters would not resolve the underlying issues and called for a more conciliatory approach. Rahul Gandhi, however, argued that students deserve accountability and justice rather than symbolic forgiveness.
The allegations regarding threats and intimidation have become part of a wider political debate over freedom of expression, policing of protests and the treatment of young demonstrators in India. Authorities have not publicly responded in detail to each allegation cited by Rahul Gandhi in his latest remarks.
