Cloud TV Desk: An emotional moment at the West Bengal swearing-in ceremony has now become one of the most talked-about political images of the week. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched the feet of 97-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar on stage, his wife (Makhanlal Sarkar wife reaction) Putul Devi could not hold back her tears while watching the event on television from their home in Siliguri.
The veteran BJP worker from Surya Nagar in Siliguri was among the special invitees at the oath-taking ceremony of West Bengal’s new government. Modi publicly praised him as a “dedicated nationalist” who had played an important role in strengthening the organisation in Bengal over several decades.
Makhanlal Sarkar, a resident of Siliguri’s Surya Nagar area, has been associated with nationalist politics since the days of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor of the BJP.
He was known as one of the close associates of Syama Prasad Mookerjee and played a role in expanding the organisation’s presence in North Bengal during the early years of the Jana Sangh movement.
Unlike many mainstream political figures, Makhanlal Sarkar largely stayed away from publicity and remained known as an organisational worker working behind the scenes.
According to reports, senior BJP leaders including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and veteran leader Lal Krishna Advani would often meet him during visits to Siliguri.
Makhanlal Sarkar had reportedly participated in the Kashmir movement alongside Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Reports say he was once arrested by Delhi Police for singing patriotic songs during the agitation. Even when asked to apologise in court, he allegedly refused to do so.
Prime Minister Modi later wrote on social media that Sarkar had “dedicated his life to the party” and made significant contributions to the organisation’s growth in West Bengal. Watching the ceremony live on television, Putul Devi became emotional seeing the Prime Minister honour her husband publicly.
She said Makhanlal Sarkar had spent years arranging food and accommodation for party workers using his own resources. Often, she herself cooked meals for visiting workers using traditional wood-fired stoves.
Speaking emotionally about her husband, she said:
“I would never have understood such honesty and devotion without living with him.”
The remark has since gone viral across political circles and social media.
Political observers believe the BJP used the moment to reinforce its image as a party rooted in long-term ideological commitment and organisational loyalty.
At a historic political event like the Bengal government swearing-in ceremony, bringing a veteran Jana Sangh-era worker to the forefront carried symbolic political significance. Apart from Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and newly sworn-in Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also greeted and bowed before Makhanlal Sarkar during the ceremony.
