Vande Bharat Sleeper pet policy
Cloud TV Desk: Passengers travelling on the new Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will now be able to travel with their pets under a newly introduced pet travel policy by Indian Railways. To make pet travel safer and more convenient, the railway authorities have introduced special “pet box” facilities (Vande Bharat Sleeper pet policy) on selected Vande Bharat Sleeper services.
According to reports, dedicated metal-enclosed pet boxes have been installed near the locomotive sections of the train. Pets such as dogs will be transported safely inside these designated compartments throughout the journey. However, passengers will not be allowed to keep pets inside regular passenger cabins or coach seating areas.
Railway officials said the booking process for the pet box facility is currently available only offline. Passengers must visit the parcel or luggage office at the departure station to complete the booking formalities. Travelers are also advised to reach the station at least three hours before departure to finish documentation and verification procedures.
To avail the facility, passengers must have a confirmed train ticket. RAC or waitlisted tickets will not qualify for pet bookings. Travelers will also need to provide a recent veterinary fitness certificate along with valid vaccination records for their pets. Reports suggest the medical certificate should generally be issued within 24 to 48 hours before travel.
The transportation fee will reportedly depend on the pet’s weight. Several reports indicate that the railway may charge around ₹30 per kilogram for the service. After successful booking, passengers will receive a luggage ticket that will act as the official booking proof.
Railway authorities have also clarified that usually only one pet will be allowed per PNR. Additionally, the service may not be available on every Vande Bharat Sleeper route. Passengers are therefore advised to confirm availability at the station before planning their journey.
Until now, pet travel on Indian trains was largely restricted to First AC cabins or luggage vans. The introduction of a dedicated pet box system on Vande Bharat Sleeper trains is being seen as a major relief for pet owners across the country.
Travel experts believe the move reflects the growing demand for pet-friendly transport services in India. Many expect Indian Railways to expand such facilities further in the future as more passengers choose to travel with their pets.
