Cloud TV Desk: A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu following the oath-taking ceremony of newly sworn-in Chief Minister Vijay. After the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has now objected to the alleged playing of “Vande Mataram” before the National Anthem during the official event (Vande Mataram Tamil Nadu oath controversy) .
Opposition parties have argued that constitutional protocol requires the National Anthem to receive top priority at state functions. According to critics, placing “Vande Mataram” ahead of the anthem was inappropriate and raised questions about adherence to official ceremonial norms.
The issue has quickly turned into a major political debate in Tamil Nadu, where discussions around language, identity, and nationalism have historically played a significant role in state politics.
According to reports, “Vande Mataram” was performed at the beginning of the ceremony before the National Anthem was played. This sequence has now drawn criticism from both CPI and VCK leaders.
VCK chief and Member of Parliament Thol. Thirumavalavan questioned why such a protocol was followed at an official government function. Earlier, CPI leaders had also criticised the arrangement, alleging that the move carried political messaging. However, the government has not yet issued a detailed official clarification regarding the controversy.

For decades, Dravidian politics in Tamil Nadu has strongly opposed what regional parties describe as attempts to impose a singular national cultural identity. As a result, songs such as “Vande Mataram” and other nationalistic symbols have periodically become subjects of political debate in the state.
The controversy comes at a time when the new government led by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is already under intense national attention following Vijay’s historic electoral victory and transition from cinema superstar to Chief Minister.
The high-profile oath-taking ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and several NDA Chief Ministers.
Supporters of TVK have defended the inclusion of “Vande Mataram,” arguing that the song holds historic importance in India’s freedom movement. Opposition leaders, however, insist that official state ceremonies must strictly follow constitutional conventions and established protocol.
The debate has now intensified political discussions across Tamil Nadu, with observers suggesting that the controversy could become one of the first major political flashpoints for the newly formed government.
