Cloud TV Desk: Tamil Nadu’s dramatic post-election political battle has taken another sharp turn after political commentator and economist S Gurumurthy criticised actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party TVK over the ongoing government formation crisis in the state.
In an interview Gurumurthy claimed that Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), committed a major strategic mistake after the election results and suggested that the party leadership was “badly advised.”
What Did S Gurumurthy Say?
S Gurumurthy argued that Vijay’s political inexperience became visible during the crucial government formation negotiations following the Assembly election results.
According to Gurumurthy, TVK should have first explored possibilities with the AIADMK instead of quickly moving towards an alliance with Congress and Left-backed parties. He described the move as a “self goal” that complicated Vijay’s attempt to form the government.
Gurumurthy further claimed that the ruling DMK was unwilling to give up direct political control and was instead attempting to influence the power equation indirectly. He suggested that Tamil Nadu politics had entered an unpredictable phase where traditional Dravidian calculations were being challenged by Vijay’s sudden rise.
Vijay’s Historic Rise In Tamil Nadu Politics
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election has completely reshaped the state’s political landscape. Vijay’s party TVK emerged as the single largest party in its very first Assembly election, winning 108 seats in the 234-member House. However, the party initially remained short of the majority mark of 118 seats.
The result effectively broke decades of political dominance by the two traditional Dravidian giants — DMK and AIADMK. Political observers described it as one of the biggest electoral upsets in Tamil Nadu’s modern history.
Following the fractured verdict, intense political negotiations began across party lines. Reports suggested that both DMK and AIADMK explored multiple options to prevent Vijay from forming the government.
Congress And Left Support Changed The Equation
As the political deadlock deepened, Congress and several Left-backed parties eventually extended support to TVK. Reports indicated that Congress, CPI, CPM, IUML and other smaller parties helped Vijay cross the majority mark.
According to reports, the combined support pushed TVK’s tally beyond the required majority figure, strengthening Vijay’s claim before the Governor.
However, the process was far from smooth. Tamil Nadu Governor RV Arlekar reportedly asked Vijay multiple times to furnish proof of majority support before inviting him to form the government.
AIADMK Refused Direct Support
One of the key factors behind the political uncertainty was AIADMK’s refusal to directly support TVK. The party publicly stated that it would not extend support to Vijay “under any circumstances.”
This decision complicated TVK’s early calculations and forced Vijay to seek backing from Congress and smaller regional parties instead.
Political experts believe this shift also changed the ideological perception of TVK, which had initially projected itself as an alternative to both the DMK and BJP-led political camps.
Why Gurumurthy’s Remarks Matter
S Gurumurthy has long been regarded as an influential voice in national political and economic discussions, especially within conservative circles. His comments are significant because they reflect broader concerns within sections of the political establishment about how Vijay handled his first major constitutional challenge as a politician.
Analysts say the coming days will determine whether TVK can successfully transition from a popular electoral force into a stable governing coalition.
