Meera Bhattacharjee Security Restored
Cloud TV Desk: The West Bengal government has decided to restore the security cover of Meera Bhattacharjee, the widow of former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, nearly a year after it was withdrawn following his death.
According to government sources, the decision was taken after a fresh review of security arrangements for former constitutional functionaries and their immediate family members. Security personnel are expected to be deployed again at the Bhattacharjee residence in Kolkata’s Palm Avenue.
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 2000 to 2011, passed away on August 8, 2024. Following his death, the security cover provided to his residence was withdrawn under the then state government’s security review policy.
Since then, Meera Bhattacharjee had been living without official security at the family residence.
Officials said the restoration of security is an administrative measure and not a political decision.
According to senior officials, the state government has a responsibility to ensure appropriate security and institutional respect for former Chief Ministers and their immediate family members whenever required following a security assessment.
The administration maintained that the decision was based solely on security considerations after a routine review.
The decision has generated political discussion in West Bengal.
Leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had earlier urged the government to restore security for Meera Bhattacharjee, arguing that the family of a former Chief Minister should receive appropriate protection.
Political observers say the government’s decision may help ease concerns raised over the withdrawal of security after Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s passing.
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was one of West Bengal’s longest-serving Chief Ministers and remained a prominent figure in Indian politics even after leaving office.
The restoration of security to his widow is being viewed by many as an administrative acknowledgment of the office he once held, while the state government has reiterated that the move is based on standard security protocols rather than political considerations.
