Cloud TV Desk: A dramatic turn of events unfolded in the Jharkhand Rajya Sabha elections as BJP-backed independent candidate Parimal Nathwani secured a surprise victory, reportedly aided by cross-voting from opposition legislators. The outcome has emerged as a significant setback for the INDIA bloc, which enjoys a numerical advantage in the state assembly.
Voting was held for two Rajya Sabha seats from Jharkhand. While the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate Baidyanath Ram comfortably won one seat, the second contest produced an unexpected result. Nathwani defeated Congress nominee Pranav Jha, despite the opposition alliance’s stronger numbers on paper.
According to reports, several legislators from alliance partners, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and CPI(ML), allegedly voted in favor of Nathwani. The cross-voting played a decisive role in altering the final outcome and ensured victory for the BJP-backed candidate.
The final tally reflected the political upset. Baidyanath Ram received 30 votes, while Parimal Nathwani secured 28 votes. Congress candidate Pranav Jha managed only 19 votes. Three votes were declared invalid.
Political observers noted that concerns over possible cross-voting had surfaced well before polling day. Both the INDIA bloc and the BJP-led NDA took extraordinary measures to keep their legislators united. Meetings were held, and MLAs were reportedly housed together to prevent defections or last-minute surprises.
Following the results, questions were raised within Congress regarding the loyalty of alliance partners. Senior leaders demanded an explanation for the unexpected voting pattern. However, RJD and CPI(ML) leaders denied allegations of betrayal and maintained that they had supported the opposition candidate.
The victory is being viewed as more than just a numerical gain for the NDA. Analysts believe it highlights vulnerabilities within the INDIA bloc and exposes coordination challenges among opposition parties ahead of future electoral battles.
For the BJP and its allies, Nathwani’s win represents a strategic success in a state where they do not command a majority. For the opposition, the result serves as a warning that internal unity remains a critical challenge.
The Jharkhand Rajya Sabha election has once again demonstrated that political arithmetic does not always guarantee political outcomes, especially when cross-voting enters the equation.
