Sunny Deol and patriotic cinema have shared a long association in Bollywood. From the ‘Border’ franchise to the ‘Gadar’ series, the actor has repeatedly appeared in films built around nationalism, war and the emotional history of India.
Now, as his much-awaited period drama ‘Batwara 1947’ approaches its theatrical release, Sunny Deol has added a historic touch to his promotional campaign.
The actor arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday to promote the upcoming film. Instead of limiting his visit to promotional events, however, Sunny explored some of the city’s most significant historical landmarks.
His first major stop was Netaji Bhawan in Bhawanipur, the historic residence associated with freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose.
Sunny toured different sections of the heritage property and looked at several objects and memorabilia connected with Netaji. He also viewed Netaji’s car and photographs documenting different aspects of his life and legacy.
During his visit to Netaji Bhawan, Sunny Deol was accompanied by Professor Sugata Bose, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s grandnephew.
Sugata Bose took the actor around the historic residence and explained different aspects of its history. Sunny appeared particularly interested in the memorabilia preserved inside the house.
The actor also photographed several objects and historical displays. Later, he shared moments from his Kolkata visit on social media, giving fans a glimpse of his interaction with the city’s heritage.
Sunny’s visit to Netaji Bhawan was particularly significant because his upcoming film is set against the backdrop of one of the most turbulent periods in modern Indian history.
The actor also visited the Victoria Memorial, another iconic landmark in Kolkata. He was seen posing in front of one of the city’s famous yellow taxis, adding a distinctly Kolkata touch to his promotional tour.
His visit therefore became more than a conventional film promotion event. It connected the actor’s upcoming historical drama with Kolkata’s own deep association with India’s freedom movement and cultural heritage.
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, ‘Batwara 1947’ is scheduled for theatrical release on August 14, just ahead of Independence Day. The film is produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit and is set against the backdrop of the Partition of India in 1947.
The cast includes Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal and Abhimanyu Singh among others.
The film has generated interest because of the combination of its historical setting, ensemble cast and the reunion of Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi.
Sunny and Santoshi have previously collaborated on several projects, making their reunion another major talking point surrounding the film.
The project also comes after the enormous commercial success of ‘Gadar 2’ in 2023. Sunny Deol’s return to a patriotic and emotionally charged narrative has consequently created expectations among his audience.
However, ‘Batwara 1947’ is not simply positioned as an action-oriented patriotic film. Its central backdrop is the Partition of India, one of the most traumatic episodes in the subcontinent’s modern history.
The film is expected to explore the human and emotional dimensions of that period through its characters and their experiences.
With its release scheduled around Independence Day, the timing is also significant. August 14 is observed in India as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, reflecting the historical significance of the Partition and its devastating human consequences.
‘Batwara 1947’ will also face competition at the box office. Emraan Hashmi’s ‘Awarapan 2’ is also scheduled to release on the same day.
The two films belong to very different genres and are likely to appeal to different sections of the audience. Nevertheless, their simultaneous release could create an interesting box-office contest.
For Sunny Deol, the challenge will be to convert the strong anticipation surrounding his return to a patriotic period drama into theatrical footfall.
His promotional tour across major Indian cities is already underway, and his Kolkata visit has added an emotional and historical dimension to the campaign.
The decision to visit Netaji Bhawan ahead of the film’s release also fits naturally with the broader themes of history, nationalism and Partition associated with ‘Batwara 1947’.
The film will finally reach theatres on August 14. The key questions now are whether audiences connect with its portrayal of Partition, how the Sunny Deol-Rajkumar Santoshi reunion performs and whether the film can create a strong opening at the box office.
With ‘Awarapan 2’ arriving on the same day, the Independence Day weekend could turn into an interesting battle between two very different cinematic offerings.
