Yum Brands Sells Pizza Hut
Cloud TV Business Desk: In one of the biggest restaurant industry deals of 2026, Yum! Brands has agreed to sell Pizza Hut in a transaction valued at approximately $2.7 billion. The move marks the end of nearly three decades of Pizza Hut ownership under Yum! Brands and reflects the challenges the iconic pizza chain has faced in recent years.
Under the agreement, Pizza Hut’s operations outside mainland China will be acquired by private equity firm LongRange Capital for around $1.5 billion. Meanwhile, Pizza Hut’s China business will be purchased by Yum China Holdings for approximately $1.2 billion. The two transactions are expected to close during the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions.
Yum! Brands said the decision followed a strategic review launched in late 2025. Company executives concluded that separating Pizza Hut into two region-focused businesses would provide a stronger path for future growth while allowing Yum! to focus on its higher-performing brands, including KFC and Taco Bell.
The sale comes after a prolonged period of difficulties for Pizza Hut, particularly in the United States and several international markets. Rising inflation, increasing food costs, changing consumer preferences, and intense competition from rivals such as Domino’s have affected sales growth. Reports indicate that Pizza Hut’s U.S. comparable-store sales have declined for multiple consecutive quarters, while the company has also announced plans to close hundreds of underperforming outlets.
In contrast, Pizza Hut’s business in China has remained relatively strong. Yum China operates more than 4,300 Pizza Hut outlets and has successfully expanded the brand through localized menus, innovative store formats, and continued investment in the casual dining segment. The acquisition gives Yum China complete control over one of its most successful restaurant brands.
Industry analysts believe the deal highlights two different stories within the same brand. While Pizza Hut has struggled in several mature markets, it continues to perform strongly in China. LongRange Capital now faces the challenge of revitalizing the global business and restoring growth in highly competitive markets.
For Yum! Brands, the transaction represents a major strategic shift. By exiting Pizza Hut, the company aims to concentrate resources on faster-growing businesses while unlocking shareholder value through the $2.7 billion sale.
